Here we are, Halloween Day, surrounded by ghost and goblins, witches are werewolves and frightening children dressed as demons and boogymen begging for treats that will give them a sugar rush enough to make any parent’s head spin. But today, that is not what is terrifying me the most…

I remember a day, not so long ago, when we used to pass Halloween in snowsuits. (I’m only thirty-five and, relatively speaking, my childhood is recent history.) We would be frustrated at the fact that the best Princess costume anyone had ever laid eyes on was covered with a bulky parka, or if we were really smart and thought ahead our Wonder Woman outfit was four sizes too big and worn over our ski jacket.  But today, in Ottawa, the beautiful autumn sun is shinning and it’s a balmy 17ºC. That is scary.

I can’t help but wonder what Halloween will be like when Anderson, my youngest child, is ten, because I can remember it being much cooler only ten years ago when I took Sarah out for her first Trick-or-Treating. That’s a very short time for such drastic climate changes, especially when looked at over recorded history.

You can have your haunted houses and ghoulish spirits, the state of the environment is plenty horror for me.
